CME course: Informed consent — a physician's guide
This 3-hour CME course has been developed as a reference to understanding the legal doctrine of informed consent and how it applies to medical liability. Physicians who complete the CME test and evaluation forms can earn 3 CME credits.

This 3-hour program is intended for physicians of all specialties who are interested in learning about informed consent.
Course objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
recognize physician responsibility related to the doctrine of informed consent;
identify barriers to informed consent and methods to overcome them;
assess areas of vulnerability inherent in patient informed consent; and
list prudent risk management strategies relevant to informed consent.
About the authors
George F. "Rick" Evans Jr., JD is a founding shareholder in the San Antonio law firm of Evans & Rowe. He has more than 31 years of trial experience. In 1974, Mr. Evans graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, and he received his Juris Doctorate from Cleveland Marshall College of Law in 1977. He has served as general counsel to the Bexar County Medical Society since 1986. He also has been an instructor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio since 1986, where he continues to instruct fourth-year medical students on the subject of jurisprudence.

Mary Angela Meyer, JD, practiced law with Franklin, Cardwell & Jones in Houston for 9 years. She has represented physicians, clinics, and hospitals in medical malpractice claims in jury trials and at the appellate level. Ms. Meyer graduated from the University of Houston Law Center where she was a member of the Order of the Barristers. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas and was honored by the Houston Bar Association with the Professionalism in Litigation Award.
