New requirements in Texas for administration of COVID-19 vaccines
Legislation passed in 2025 sets forth new requirements for Texas health care providers to meet before they administer COVID-19 vaccines.(1) The new requirements are:
- Obtain the written informed consent of the individual (or the parent/guardian/other person authorized to consent).
- Share a new Texas-specific vaccine information statement.
- Obtain from the patient (or parent/guardian) a signed acknowledgment that they received the Texas vaccine information statement. This acknowledgment may be included in the written consent.
Practices should continue to share the federal vaccine information sheet (VIS) as already required by law.
These requirements — which became effective September 1,2025 — are the result of Texas House Bill 4535. Current VIS forms and the Texas-required form are available on the DSHS website.
