New CME requirements begin September 1

New courses, verification in TMB tracking tool to be required for license renewal

New CME requirements begin September 1

New courses, verification in TMB tracking tool to be required for license renewal

Beginning September 1, 2026, Texas physicians must meet new CME reporting requirements in order to renew their Texas medical license. License holders seeking renewal on or after September 1 must enter their completed CME credits into CE Broker, the Texas Medical Board’s (TMB) online CME portal. (1)

Free basic accounts with CE Broker are available to all TMB licensees, and the TMB encourages physicians to set up their CE Broker accounts before September 1 in order to learn the platform. TMB has also created a video detailing how to set up an account.

Physicians will need to enter information about their completed CME courses into CE Broker and may need to upload course completion certificates or other documentation (as PDFs or image files). (2) Physicians should enter courses upon completion or as soon as possible to avoid having to log them all at once at license renewal.

These new reporting requirements are the result of Senate Bill 912, which was passed by the Texas legislature in 2025. The legislation requires Texas regulatory agencies — including the TMB — to verify compliance in a tracking system of continuing education (CE) requirements for all licensed health care practitioners under their jurisdiction. (1)

Texas physicians are required to complete “at least 48 credits of CME every 24 months (the 24-month timeline is in relation to the biennial registration period, not the calendar year). At least half of these hours must be in formal, category I or 1A courses.” (3)

Texas physicians will be unable to renew their medical licenses if the TMB cannot verify their CME compliance in CE Broker. (1)

Physicians who have taken online CME courses on TMLT’s learning platform can view and print CME certificates by following these instructions. For those attending live programs, CME certificates are sent after each course. If you need a certificate from a live program, please contact the TMLT CME team at cmemail@tmlt.org .

Additional CME requirements
“Life of the Mother Act” CE

Senate Bill 31 (also known as “The Life of the Mother Act”) requires Texas physicians who provide obstetric care to complete a one-time, mandatory CE course on pregnancy-related medical emergencies. This course is now available through MyTMB. (4)

Physicians in the following specialties will be required to complete the course when they apply for a license or before their next renewal: family medicine; emergency medicine; critical care medicine ob-gyn; obstetrical anesthesia, maternal-fetal medicine; and obstetrics-gynecology, regardless of whether the physician currently provides obstetrical care.

Please see the TMB FAQs for a full list of applicable specialties and board certifications. (5) The TMB will “provide additional notice for those physicians who have reported a Board Certification, or a primary or secondary specialty to the Board that may involve obstetric medicine.” (4)

“Any licensee required to complete this course will be unable to proceed with their renewal until the course shows as complete in the TMB system.” (4)

The TMB has also made a copy of CE presentation available here for informational purposes only. Physician cannot obtain CE credit for reviewing this copy of the presentation. (5)

Forensic evidence CME

Texas physicians — especially those who treat patients in emergency room settings — and who perform forensic exams on sexual assault survivors will be required to complete two hours of CME related to forensic evidence collection. The training must be a formal Category 1 course or approved/recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing. (6)

This requirement takes effect September 1, 2026. (6)
